Getting started

Sign in, create an account and set the master password that creates your vault.

Musubi Vault keeps passwords and other secrets for a team. Everything you store is encrypted in your browser before it is sent, so the server keeps it without being able to read it.

Signing in is not unlocking

There are two steps, and they do different things. Sign in says who you are, with your Musubi identity. The master password opens the vault, in your browser, and the server never sees it. You can be signed in with the vault closed — that is the normal state whenever you are not using it.

Create an account

An account is the space your team shares: its collections, its people and its history. If you do not belong to any yet, the start page offers to create one.

  1. Open Musubi Vault and press Sign in.
  2. Fill in Account name — how your team calls itself.
  3. Check the Address. It is suggested from the name, goes in the URL (/t/your-address) and accepts lowercase letters, digits and hyphens, up to 40 characters. If it is taken, choose another.
  4. Press Create account. You become its owner.

Being the owner lets you administer the account, not read it. What anyone can open — owner included — is decided by which collections they were given. See Collections and sharing.

Set your master password

Setting the master password is what creates your vault: your keys are generated right there, in your browser.

  1. Type it in Master password. It needs at least twelve characters; length helps more than symbols, so a few unrelated words make a good one.
  2. Type it again in Type it again.
  3. Press Set master password. The screen shows “Deriving your key…”: it is slow on purpose, so do not close the tab.

If you lose the master password, the content is lost. Nobody can reset it — not an administrator, not support, not Musubi. The screen lists recovery policies for the account; none of them is implemented yet. Write the password down somewhere safe before you store anything you cannot afford to lose.

Joining someone else's account

When you do not belong to any account, the start page suggests asking an owner to add you. Adding people to an existing account is not available in the app yet, so for now every account starts with the person who created it.
